Food alone does not create complete habitat. Evaluate water, nesting and escape cover, disturbance, plot access and landscape connectivity with the planting plan.
Match the crop to intended use
Chufa and lablab occupy distinct wildlife roles.
- Use chufa where protected stands can mature and produce underground tubers.
- Use lablab where warm-season leafy browse is the objective.
- Size plots for expected pressure and protect establishment.
- Monitor actual wildlife use rather than assuming attraction.
Protect the farm and the wildlife plan
Contain chufa where volunteer yellow nutsedge would create an agricultural problem, and confirm current food-plot, baiting and crop-manipulation rules before planting or disturbing a mature stand.
