Integrated management

Biology and chemistry are management choices—not opposing teams

Cover crops can reduce dependence on selected inputs in some systems, but credible recommendations define where biology complements, substitutes or cannot replace chemistry.

01

Avoid false either-or claims

Seed is not a pesticide. A cover crop may suppress weeds, influence nutrient supply or interrupt a pest cycle, but each effect depends on establishment, target species and timing.

02

Use a substitution test

Before reducing an input, define the function it performs and the evidence that the cover crop can provide that function.

  • Identify the target weed, nematode or nutrient need.
  • Set a threshold and monitoring method.
  • Run a managed strip or field comparison.
  • Keep a rescue option during transition.
03

Make claims at the right scale

Report the crop, soil, climate, rate and comparator. Do not turn a trial result into a universal promise.
